How To Choose Great Art For Your Home

How To Choose Great Art For Your Home

If you haven't bought art before, you may find the prospect intimidating. However, there are a number of basic commonsense principles to follow – if you stick to these, buying art can be a pleasurable and fulfilling experience.

The first thing to remember is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you don't like a piece of art, there is no point in buying it, even if everyone is saying how wonderful it is. Ultimately, you are the person who is going to have to look at the piece every day, so what you think counts the most. If you haven't taken the time to develop any opinions about what types of art you do like, try visiting local art galleries, or look at some collections online from a reputable art dealer such as Park West Galleries. If you don't feel confident enough to do this by yourself, ask a friend whose opinions you trust.

Next, make a realistic evaluation of how much you can afford to spend. This is important, because you want to enjoy your purchase. If you overspend then you will feel guilty about it – which can rob art of much of its joy. On the other hand, you need to think of art as being an investment, and therefore there's no point in buying cheap art whose value will drop to next to nothing in a few years' time. Try to find a piece at the high end of your price range, but make sure that you are getting a good deal by comparing the price you are paying with the prices for similar works by similar artists – for example, look at auction sales results. If you are making a very expensive purchase, you may want to have the piece independently valued by a company such as Bonhams.

You also need to be realistic about where you can display art in your home. For example, if you only have limited wall space, then there is no point in buying a huge canvas that will overpower your room. Art that is oversized for the space it occupies is also hard to appreciate – you need to be able to take a step back and look at the piece. On the other hand, art that is too small for the space it occupies will be lost.

Finally, think about how the art fits in with your decor. Obviously, you shouldn't just buy a piece of fine art as if it was a cushion designed to provide a color accent, but it does need to be shown in a sympathetic setting. Normally, if you have neutral colors in your house, then things should be fine, but if you have strong color schemes then there is the distinct possibility of a clash. You also need to think about the style of the picture. For instance, an ultramodern abstract painting may not go well if you have decorated your house using an old-fashioned Victorian motif.
